How To Make Your Cut Tulips Last Longer

Flowers in a Galvanized Antique Bucket, Wooden Easter Bunny

Caring for Tulips

With tulips, I cut the stems on an angle first before placing them in cold water.

(repeating this step every couple of days…tulips continue to grow in the vase)

Removing any bottom leaves.

Sometimes I will add a few ice cubes into the water as well.

This really depends on when I will be photographing them and what look I’m going for.

With photography, I love the look of floppy tulips.

With Easter just around the corner, I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos of my Easter Bunny with a few tulips.

She’s one of two that I have and both are equally adorable.

The story is…that a Grandpa carved each one out of a single piece of wood for his grandkids.

How Amazing!

As we slowly get our cut flower garden ready I have also been busy looking at bulbs for fall planting.

With a focus on double bloom and parrot tulips.

Two varieties I have been looking at are Double Sugar and Renown Unique.

Both look so beautiful…now the question is…how many do I order?

Sticking to three varieties…buying more of each instead of several different kinds.

This will give more blooms of the same variety for photos…something I have learned.

If you enjoy your blooms in the garden, in your home, and for photos.

Buy more of the same flower so you don’t feel bad cutting them.

Last year I loved looking at our sunflowers in our yard and found myself reluctant to cut them.

I wanted the smiles in the yard and enough to cut for photos.

So this year I bought way more sunflowers…luckily seeds are inexpensive!

Amsterdam Ave

I’ve had this Antique Sign for several years.

Hopefully, it will finally find a spot somewhere in our cut flower garden or the Flower House.

My mom is from Amsterdam and thus the reason for adding this sign.

Last week I shared the construction of the Flower House and asked you to share some favorite flowers.

I appreciate it when you all leave comments and share what works for you or what you love.

If you have any favorite tulips or where you like to purchase them from please share them in the comments below.

Let’s Learn & Grow Together

Kindly, xo

  • Omgosh! That rabbit, handcrafted? Absolutely amazing. Does the ice perk the tulips up? I’ve always cut my flowers on an angle to allow the flowers to get to the water but never ice. It all looks amazing. Have a great Easter ♡ Much love, Lynn & Jonathon.

    • yes, it’s so adorable!

I have only used ice with tulips and I would not say it perks them up…I have had success with keeping the water cold and keeping them perky instead of trying to revive them. Hope that makes sense
