The Flower Garden In August

The Flower Garden in Late August

The days have been reaching triple digits, flattening some of our new perennials. By midday, they look like pancakes.

While I’m sweating it out in the flower garden, I have noticed all the conversations about fall and the magazine covers with fall images.  Fall is beautiful here and definitely a favorite of ours, but we still have so much happening in the garden.

For now I’m busy watering, weeding, mowing and filling the birdbaths and pond with cool water.

The photos I’m sharing in this month’s Flower Journal are of some of my favorite antique finds.

We have two of these antique urns that we found in an antique store in South Carolina. .

The urns sit on either side of the back entrance to the flower garden, and this has become one of my favorite little spaces. I love how the urns frame the entrance. There’s something about this corner of the garden that feels a bit like a storybook.

Antique Urn

This larger stone urn was a found at the Liberty Antique Festival several years ago. It sits in the center of a circle with peonies planted all around it.

The pathway is pink granite that my husband found on Marketplace. It came in a large slab, and he cuts each piece for the pathways throughout the flower garden.

I think that’s one of the things I love most about a garden. It doesn’t have to be finished to be beautiful.

This time of year, the flower garden looks a little tired, but I’ve noticed that the butterflies, birds, and bees don’t seem to mind. They are still busy moving through the garden, enjoying whatever is blooming.

And maybe that’s a good reminder for me, too. The garden may be tired from the long, hot summer, but there is still plenty of beauty here.
