Sunflowers in the flower house

Sunflowers, Pro Cut White Lite

When I started growing flowers, I didn’t know about all the different varieties. With sunflowers, you usually see the traditional colors in the grocery store or even at the farmers market. I had never seen ProCut White Lite until I grew my own. That’s one of the beautiful things about growing flowers.

As far as sunflowers go, I find them cheerful in the flower garden. When I see them standing tall, facing the sun, they always make me smile. They look so happy.

This collection of photos was taken on one of those sweltering days.  It was nearly 100 degrees with humidity. A wasp nest had settled just inside the flower house door, and I knew thunderstorms were coming that evening. There was garden work to finish, but midafternoon is often when I take photos in the flower house.

The flower house, which my husband built, is a working studio. It’s used daily for storing vases and buckets, arranging flowers, and creating photographs. I don’t try to hide that. I embrace the beauty of it as it is.

When it comes to photographing a bouquet of flowers, I don’t think it needs to be fancy to be beautiful. Sometimes it’s just a few stems in a vintage vase or an old bucket.

The vessel is a big part of my photography. Once an antique dealer, it’s in my soul to use something old and time-worn.

I’ve always loved seeing other people’s spaces, and I hope mine offers that same kind of invitation. It’s a glimpse into my creative life, rooted in the flower garden.
